The temple housing the relic of the Buddha's tooth, in the Kandyan royal complex.
Possession of the relic was for centuries treated as a condition of legitimate rule, which is why it moved with the capital and why the temple sits beside the palace rather than apart from it. The present building is largely of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with the golden canopy added in the twentieth. It was damaged by a bomb in 1998 and repaired.
