Five caves under a rock overhang, in continuous religious use since the first century BCE and containing the largest surviving body of Buddhist mural painting on the island.
The paintings cover about 2,100 square metres of ceiling and wall, layered over many centuries with substantial Kandyan-period work. The caves hold over 150 Buddha images. The ceilings follow the natural contour of the rock, so the painted scenes bend with it.
