Traditionally held to be the first stupa built on the island, raised by King Devanampiya Tissa in the third century BCE shortly after the arrival of Buddhism.1
It is small by comparison with the later giants, and surrounded by the slender stone pillars that once carried a wooden roof over the dome — an early form that does not survive elsewhere in this condition.
