Anura Kumara Dissanayake (born 1968) became President of Sri Lanka in September 2024. He was born in Thambuttegama in the North Central Province and graduated from the University of Kelaniya.
He entered Parliament in 2000, served as Minister of Agriculture in 2004, and became leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in 2014. He leads the National People's Power coalition, which won the 2024 presidential election and a parliamentary majority shortly afterwards. His election marked the first time a candidate from outside the two parties that had alternated in power since independence won the presidency.
