Dingiri Banda Wijetunga (1922–2008) became President of Sri Lanka in May 1993, following the assassination of Ranasinghe Premadasa, and served until November 1994.
Born in Udunuwara near Kandy, he worked as a teacher and in the cooperative movement before entering Parliament in 1965. He served as Mayor of Kandy, as Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, and as Minister of Power and Energy, and became Prime Minister in 1989. As President he was noted for a personally austere style, and he declined to contest the 1994 election, retiring from politics at its close.
