Ranil Wickremesinghe (born 1949) served as President of Sri Lanka from 2022 to 2024, and as Prime Minister six times between 1993 and 2022 — more than anyone else in the country's history.
He was educated at Royal College, Colombo and qualified as an advocate. He entered Parliament in 1977, held several cabinet portfolios under J.R. Jayewardene and Ranasinghe Premadasa, and led the United National Party for much of the period after 1994. He became President in July 2022, appointed by Parliament following the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa during the economic crisis, and oversaw the negotiation of an International Monetary Fund programme.
