Dudley Senanayake

2nd Prime Minister of Ceylon

Dudley Shelton Senanayake (1911–1973) was Prime Minister of Ceylon three times — in 1952–53, briefly in 1960, and from 1965 to 1970. He was the son of D.S. Senanayake and succeeded him on his death.

He was educated at Cambridge and called to the bar before entering politics. His first term ended when he resigned in 1953 following the hartal, a general strike against the withdrawal of the rice subsidy in which several people were killed — a resignation on a point of conscience that was unusual then and remains so.

His 1965–70 government pursued food self-sufficiency, and the substantial increase in domestic rice production during that period is generally regarded as his principal achievement.
