Karu Jayasuriya

Former Speaker of the Parliament

Karu Jayasuriya (born 1940) was Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2020.

He served in the Ceylon Army, worked in business, and was Sri Lankan Ambassador to Germany before entering electoral politics. He was Mayor of Colombo's Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte from 1997 to 1999 and held ministerial portfolios including Power and Energy, Public Administration, and Buddha Sasana.

He is most widely associated with his conduct as Speaker during the constitutional crisis of October–December 2018, when he declined to recognise the disputed replacement of the Prime Minister and insisted that the question be settled by a vote of Parliament and by the courts.
