A rock temple of the third century BCE, best known for the carved panel called the Isurumuniya Lovers.
The identity of the two figures is not settled — the most repeated reading connects them to Prince Saliya, son of Dutugemunu, and Asokamala, a woman of a community outside his own whom he married at the cost of his claim to the throne. Whether or not the identification holds, the story attached to the carving is one about caste and its cost, which is why it has stayed in circulation.
