Built under King Mahasena in the third century CE, and still irrigating land today.
As the tank recedes in the dry season it exposes grassland that draws one of the largest seasonal gatherings of Asian elephants anywhere. That is an accident of engineering rather than a design intention, and it is a reasonable illustration of how thoroughly these works reshaped the dry-zone landscape.
