Four Buddha images cut from a single granite face during the reign of Parakramabahu I, and generally considered the summit of Sinhalese rock sculpture.
The reclining figure is over fourteen metres long. The standing figure beside it, arms folded across the chest in an unusual posture, has been the subject of long argument — whether it is the Buddha or his disciple Ananda. The carving is technically remarkable for the way the sculptors worked with the granite's natural banding rather than against it.
